Gaspé Peninsula Backpacking Trip

Journey to the Edge of the World

This is a multi-faceted, cross-cultural experience integrating French Quebec culture and outdoor leadership, introducing campers to the stunning landscape of the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec. Campers will follow the trail and compass along the path of the International Appalachian Trail, a geologic continuation of the traditional Appalachian Trail. Participants must have successfully completed one or more Chewonki remote trips, or had similar experiences.

Program Type: Backpacking

Length: 3 Weeks

Session 2: July 21 – August 12

Rugged, Remote & Rewarding

Participants travel from Chewonki by van to the Matane Reserve in eastern Quebec. Here the group will begin backpacking on the International Appalachian Trail. The group will hike east for the next 3 weeks, practicing expedition behavior while going through the Parc de la Gaspésie. The route traverses the majestic peaks of the Chic-Choc Mountains, home to the southernmost herd of caribou in eastern North America.

Learn Together in a World Apart

On the trail, the group will practice the skills of remote travel, including leadership, route finding, and other advanced camping techniques. They will spend many of their days above treeline and in remote boreal landscapes, living far from ordinary life and close to many types of wildlife. At the trip’s end, the group returns to Wiscasset to share and celebrate their experiences with the rest of the Chewonki community.
