Girls Camp Owls

Owls

Campers ages 10 to 11 may attend Camp Chewonki as an Owl for a 3-week experience that provides the opportunity to learn and grow as part of a cabin group of eight campers and two cabin leaders. Campers spend time in camp developing skills and having fun in daily activities, participating in camp life and traditions, and building towards embarking on an exciting and challenging remote trip in the beautiful woods and waters of Maine. While new campers join us in every age group, we have designed our overnight camp progression to increase in rigor with each successive summer to develop caring and confident leaders who are prepared with the skills to successfully graduate into our Leadership Expedition program.

Birds of a Feather

10- and 11-year old campers are typically in their first or second summer at camp. They spend time learning the basics of how to make friends and share a living space with other people. We make sure Owls have a well-rounded schedule that introduces them to all of the activities and opportunities camp has to offer. The Owl remote trip is a 5-6 day canoe trip designed to build comfort and confidence paddling a boat and living in the outdoors.

Owl Cabin Trips

Please note: The specific trip itinerary for each cabin will vary based on weather conditions, river water levels, site availability, and the overall skill level and age range of the group. Here are some example cabin trip adventures:

Owls at 4th Debsconeag Lake

Experience the magic of 4th Debsconeag Lake Campground

Known by many of our campers as “the most magical place on Earth”, our youngest Owls will get to travel up to a truly special place. Located in the Debsconeag Lake Wilderness Area, just southwest of Katahdin, this property will give campers a taste of what it is like to be in a remote setting surrounded by an abundance of different flora and fauna.

Sleep in yurts, explore the area in the shadow of Katahdin

Owls will explore the nearby granite cliffs, hop between the Debsconeag Lakes in canoes and hike nearby trails throughout each day. To end the day, campers will cook, sleep and spend quality time between the cozy yurts and our lodge. A perfect stepping stone toward spending nights in tents at remote campsites in their later camp years.

Owls at the West Grand Lakes

Travel through the backcountry

Up in the Downeast region of Maine, older Owls will get their first taste of a true backcountry expedition. Here they will navigate through the lakes and streams around the scenic West Grand Lakes. This adventurous trip includes river travel, lake crossings and even a little upstream travel. Participants take roles in our crews at camp and help with every part of the experience: shelter creation, firewood processing, cooking and more!

Wade Through the Getchels

Hop out of your boat and pull your way between lakes as you traverse through an area known as the Getchels. Navigate upstream passing by beaver dams and through tall grasses. Keep an eye out for Moose and expect to find a lot of mud!

Everyone is Welcome!

From the first moment you arrive at Camp Chewonki this summer, we want you to know you are a welcome member of the community! Your cabin leaders and cabin mates will greet you at the cabin and help you get settled in. In the opening days of camp, we establish community norms & expectations through collaborative work on the challenge course and through the creation of a cabin agreement. The goal: determine who we are as a group and how we want to be as members of the group.
